Eyeworks
I used to visit Dr. Maher when he was with Sears Optical in Cupertino. He is a doctor who is trully interested in his patients' well being. After he left Sears Optical in Cupertino, he was too far away for us to see him. Now that he's back in the area, he is once again our Dr. He is also great with kids.
Tony & Alba's Pizza & Pasta
We stop in at this location once and a while when we are hungry and on our way home from Santa Cruz. Excellent pizza and salads. This location also has large wide-screen TVs, video games an upstairs party room and ample downstairs seating. You order and your items are delivered to your table when ready. Service can be a bit slow, but worth the wait.
Ye Ole Waffle Shop
This place is nothing fancy, but it's perfect for hungry college students who are looking for large portions at reasonable prices. Their cheese grits are fabulous and their waffles and omelettes are light and fluffy. As with other areas on Franklin Street, there is very little parking.
Carolina Coffee Shop
Nice, relaxed atmosphere. A quieter place to go if you want to hang out and read for a bit. Great omelettes, eggs benedict and scones, excellent coffee. Attentive service.
West Valley Branch Library
This newly rebuilt branch is wonderful with natural lighting, ample computers and tables, a great children's area and easy checkout and reservation policies. They also offer a summer reading program for kids that we're participated in for the past 3 years.
Carolina Inn Chapel Hill
Wonderful place to stay on campus at UNC Chapel Hill. Convenient to Franklin Street (the campus' main drag) and its lively restaurants, clubs, etc. Four star restaurant on the premises with great southern inspired food with a twist. Rooms are nicely decorated and service is excellent.
Seacrest Palace Diner
This is a newer New York Art Deco style diner that serves just about anything you'd care to order including breakfast all day long. Each booth has a juke box and they feature a wide variety of daily specials including fabulous crab cakes and the "Catch of the Day." Portions are truck driver-sized, so make sure you don't frequent this place too often unless you're underweight!
Friendly's Ice Cream Shop
Friendly's is know for its ice cream sundaes, but is also an excellent place to stop for your basic burger and fries, club sandwiches, soups. A good place to take the kids.
Meadow Edge At West Sayville Golf Course
We recently attended a large gathering at Meadow's Edge which is an historic house turned country club that sits right on the Great South Bay. Beautiful old home, wonderful views, an excellent place for weddings and other large gatherings. Excellent variety of buffett items and desserts. Cons- The wines served here were mediocre and it's a bit pricey
San Jose Museum of Art
The San Jose Museum of Art is a great place to take the family. Besides their many permanent works such as their fabulous blown glass chandeliers and other sculpture, they also have some new media exhibits that seem to fascinate kids. Admission is reasonable and free for kids under 6. We also went on a docent led tour here recently that we really enjoyed.
