Step Ahead Educational Supply
I am always shopping for great, fun preschool supplies. This store has what I need 95% of the time. If they don't have it, they will order it for me. Elizabeth and her staff are very helpful. I always look forward to my visit.
Capitol City Tattoo
Very clean, nice tattoo studio. The employees were very helpful for first timers. The artist was friendly and did a great job. The color has not faded at all and the tattoo has very clean lines. Pricey, but we will return.
Ligers Bakery
I have ordered my daughter's last two birthday cakes from here. Both times it has been delicious! The icing is very fresh and not crusty...the cake is moist and yummy. I picked out the design from their book and it matched perfectly. Prices are high, but you must pay for quality!
Chappy's Deli
Chappy's is great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I usually go for lunch because it is fast and always tastes the same. Make sure to try their daily soups...the chili and chicken & dumpling are wonderful. It is great for kids...each kid's meal is free with an adult meal every day. Free frozen yogurt for dessert too.
Johnny Corino's
Make sure to visit during lunch hours (until 3:00 week days) for a great deal. They have all you can eat soup, salad and bread for only $5.99. Great for the late afternoon when you can skip dinner too. I have also had the lasagna and was pleased.
Surfside Water Park
This is a fun day for everyone in the family. They have a nice wave pool and a kiddie pool for the little ones. Older children and adults have large water slides to use all day. The lazy river is my favorite. I enjoy cruising along in the tube at my own pace. Food prices are high, so make sure to eat before coming.
Petruccelli's Italian Eatery
I try to hit this place each time I'm in Birmingham. It starts with their appetizing bread loaf, which works perfectly with the vinegar-oil dipping combination.
I knocked out some spaghetti last time. It was pretty good. Nothing amazing.
I usually hit the stromboli, which is amazing. Why didn't I get it last time? It's heavy. Like SUPER heavy.
The caesar salads use a unique dressing that has plenty of zing. I can't stand these no-taste dressings you get most places. Not at Petruccelli's. Service has been at least average every time I've gone. For whatever reason, I get better service when I sit directly across from the bar. They're somewhat serious about their wine at Petruccelli's, so that's a good thing if you're into that. I like Michelob Ultra. They do beer, too.
Probably the coolest thing about Pet's is that you can take your kids there, yet you can make it a date place. The area by the bar is more isolated and dark, which provides a surprisingly fertile macking environment compared to the bright (north) side of the restaurant.
Corsino's Italian Foods
This is the official hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The pizza is the best in town and the homemade meatballs melt in your mouth. My daughter loves to go here because she can get a plastic ring when she cleans her plate. Excellent through and through...parking is the only drawback.
University of Kentucky
I graduated from UK in 98. I went there for a second degree, and really enjoyed my time in the (fledgling) communications school. It's growing like a weed these days. The "new" library (finished in 99) is a truly transcendent place to study. It has everything you can imagine -- space, wifi, attractive co-eds.
I thought my professors were average for the most part, particularly the ones teaching what I'd call "standard" courses. My journalism professors were certainly above average. Roy Moore and Scoobie Ryan are outstanding.
There has been a real flood of money put into the school during the past 20 years, so it's making up for what I considering a pretty mediocre period from 1970-90. There are tons of new buildings and it feels like a place that's really coming alive.
Parking is a problem, as it is most places.
Solid school. What you'd expect from a place with enrollment of 20k+. You get what you put into it.
Bolognas Joe Catering
If you want to have a party and serve wonderful Italian food without all the mess, call Joe Bolognas and they will cater it for you. From start the finish, the party I had was easy and yummy. Lasagna, breadsticks, spaghetti with homemade meatballs all were great. The prices were reasonable and everything arrived very hot.
