Juan In A Million
There's nothing like a Saturday morning row on Town Lake and a trip to Juan in a MIllion for a Don Juan breakfast taco. For $3.25, you find more than enough delicious food on your plate.
The place packs quickly and parking could be tough, but it's a fun, cheap morning trip. You can't really beat this kind of deal.
Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas
Alamo is not only famous for their dinner/movie brilliance. Their eclectic ideas for TV or general genre events are a phenomenon! Ever attended a musical or music video sing-a-long or a 12-hour multi-feature extravaganza or a season premiere of your favorite TV show complete with a visit from some celebrities?
If you live in Austin or nearby you must pick up their newsletter or subscribe to the list serve to be on top of all these mind-blowing activities.
The heart and spirit of the Drafthouse encapsulates all that is good about Austin, Texas. You'll never want to see a movie anywhere else.
Parma Pasta & Pizza
Parma's is located in a strip shopping center and is frequently overlooked because it is a mile from the freeway strip with dozens of recognizable chain restaurants. If you want an intimate atmosphere complete with live music and a visit with the owner, then BYOB of wine and come on in! The food is delicious and outrageously under-priced! You can leave the lunch table after soup/salad, a full meal and drink for around five dollars. The majority of their dinners are less than $10. And the portions are wonderful. My parents have been regulars for years, but all customers are greeted warmly like old friends. You will walk away smiling.
Bread & Ink Cafe
Located on eclectic Hawthorne Blvd, we had somewhat of a chance encounter with Bread and Ink while looking for dinner near my brother's new place. But we enjoyed such an incredible evening that we went back two nights later! The Curry Butternut Squash Soup is a cacophony of flavors that makes your whole body smile. And the white fish with "green tomato paste" that I initially considered just wiping off absolutely blew me away! The first taste in your mouth is wonderful tangy with a touch of spicy, but just as you swallow you are overcome with an entirely different sweetness that takes you by surprise! The atmosphere is intimate yet welcoming and the staff seems at home and delighted to serve. Don't pass this fabulous restaurant up!
Powell's City of Books
As a visitor to Portland, I absolutely had to check out Powell's. At first glance, it can be a bit overwhelmed. The sheer magnitude and inventory of the store is outstanding. The high shelving and colorful layout is a severe contrast to the megabrand, Barnes and Noble, but the change can be quite stimulating. The employees KNOW books and can be a great resource. And if you've never been or didn't know it existed, you must take some time to explore the Rare Book Room. It is an incredible museum of historical literature. Powell's can be helpful if you need a specific book, but it is also a fantastic way to spend a few hours exploring on a rainy afternoon.
