Robert Wholey & Co Inc
Wholey's is synonymous with fresh seafood in Pittsburgh. They get fresh arrivals from around the world daily. In some cases you can pick out live specimens, and they'll fillet & clean them for you while you shop. They have a great selection of local meats and produce and the ice is free - it doesn't get much better than this! They're a strip district institution, and rightfully so.
House Of Hunan
Title says it all. Best Chinese food ever. The interior is a little run down, and sometimes I feel like it could be a front for mob activities, but they make some tasty tasty food. The soup & egg rolls are excellent & they serve traditional Chinese candies & desserts. Speak a little Mandarin to the staff and they'll take you in as a member of the family. Kind of far from Pittsburgh, but worth the drive.
Rook's East Side Saloon
Rook's is a nice family owned restaurant just off of Duss Ave. Sometimes it can be a little smoky, but they serve great traditional American food. Their fried fish sandwiches are huge, as are most of their other entrees. Don't come here for a classy first date, but as a lunchtime stop, it's hard to beat. The staff is friendly and will soon get to know you and your tastes from memory. Cheap, too. It's nice to see that they've managed to succeed in Ambridge, even through the economic downturn.
China Palace
China Palace has some of the best American Chinese food I've ever had - and I've had a lot, including some in China proper. They give you huge quantities of well-seasoned food, garnished with colored radish flowers - at very reasonable prices. Hot tea is complementary and they can do eat-in, take-out or delivery. Two could easily split one entree. Free Tootsie Rolls on exiting are a nice touch as well. Has a sushi bar, but I haven't partaken. Go for the General Tso's Chicken or Shrimp if you like spicy.
Sewickley Speakeasy
Lately, it seems like this place is never open, though the few times I've been there the food has been good. Tasty, and nothing special compared to other restaurants, but good. It's an expensive joint that doesn't quite recreate the speakeasy feel it is named after. Seafood is a specialty, but you can get better seafood by going into Pittsburgh. All in all, a nice place, but nothing really special.
Sewickley Cafe
Agree with the other review - it can be a little crowded and noisy inside, but then again, for a converted soccer store, it's pretty good. Try and eat there in the spring / summer and sit outside on the patio for a much nicer experience. The food is wonderful & light, but it is on the pricey side. Good date restaurant or staple for the health conscious. They do have a take-out special for two that is both reasonably priced, ample in quantity and overall delicious.
Little Athens Of Sewickley
Little Athens is a solid Greek restaurant in Sewickley. Prices are average and the food is wonderful. They make great salads (Greek & Gyro), world-class hummus and great stuffed grape leaves. Be prepared to wait, though. For some reason, I've never been able to get in and out of there in less than 1.5 hours - maybe 45 minutes for takeout. The owner also can be a little bit irritable, but the staff are great... kind of a little bit run down inside, too.
Sewickley Hotel
The Sewickley Hotel has been a staple in downtown Sewickley for years, though it has undergone several changes in management. The food is consistently good (red meat & turtle soup tend to be their best entrees) and the environment is relaxed. Recently they were a smoke-free establishment, but new owners reversed that policy, and at times, the environment can be a little too carcinogenic. But, if you're looking for a steak to go with your whiskey & cigar, the Sewickley Hotel would be perfect! Kind of expensive, but what do you expect in Sewickley?
Carhops Sub Shop
Carhops is a great local, greasy sub shop. Custom sandwiches and subs are their specialty & the place has great automotive themed decor. A junkyard sandwich comes with all the fixins - a la Primanti's - and a half sub is huge - more than a foot long. A full sub would easy feed a small family. Go during a Steelers game or when they have live music for a great experience. The grill doesn't look like it's been cleaned in a while, but in my opinion, that makes everything taste better.
Marco & Lucas
Marco & Luca is a great place on the downtown mall. Dumplings are their specialty & they are CHEAP. Their noodle dishes are good too, but you'd be remiss to not sample their dumplings. Dinner for two with drinks is easily less than $10 and talking to the owners (Marco & Luca) will reward you with a great story of finding love as a refugee and eventually moving to America.
