We ordered a tart tatin, and my friend, who was a baker for years, politely told the waiter that it was still frozen inside. The waiter insisted that the dessert was never frozen. My companion told the waiter that he could TASTE the freezer burn. The waiter was a total snob and didn't take it off the bill until we asked again. Come on.
Take your $9 elsewhere for dessert.
Other things were fine. Great wine selection. But a restaurant is only as good as its staff.
No doubt, Sanam Luang is terrific for late-night Thai food. But vegetarians, beware: there's pork in them there greens. Make sure you ask very specific questions if you are on a meat-free diet! Good pad thai if you don't mind the uncertainty.
I have spent countless Saturday mornings enjoying the Sunrise Special at the Mustard Seed Cafe--the most delicious egg sandwich around. Comes with a side of fruit or potatoes and plenty of coffee refills. Always a great atmosphere too, and friendly servers. Love the Seed.
but, it has to be said, outrageously expensive. You could buy a pint of Ben and Jerry's for what a small gelato costs here. And they charge extra for exotic flavors like Kyoho grape when it's in season. I'd give it five stars if it weren't for the price!
Very good pizzas, especially the ones with fresh vegetables. Perfect pizza crust. The pineapple's a favorite, with lots of hot sauce. The wait staff can be pretty surly, but I can't say that's terribly unusual for pizza places in LA. Also, the wine selection isn't the best. But go. And leave the car at home if you can.
You can get a fantastic Greek salad at the Middle East in between sets of some band downstairs. It's awesome to have a way to get fed at a club. Most places have beer. The Middle East has beer AND pumpkin kibbeh. Fantastic.
Richie's slush on a hot summer day? Like nothing else in the world. My favorite is the lemon, but you can also get blue vanilla, root beer, watermelon, cherry... so many flavors. Mix them together--to die for.
Where else can you get a meatball sub at the counter for lunch and shrimp fra diavolo 'round the back for dinner? Vinny's is a godsend. My nana used to love the tripe. Go! Be prepared to wait, but you won't regret it.
It's great to have salsa options at a taco bar, and Picante II has terrific homemade salsas. Sometimes it can be crowded but it's usually worth the trip (and the wait). Have a chicken burrito, add the hot and spicy salsa and ask for sour cream on the side.
I live in Southern California and I still miss Anna's Taqueria in Somerville, Mass.! Despite the abundance of good Mexican food around here, I remember Anna's burritos so fondly. They just did everything right. The guacamole was top-rate, too!
