Akbar

Los Angeles, CA Bars & Clubs 03/21/08: 'Silverlake Gay Hotspot'

Akbar is a fun experience for the LGBT crowd and their friends. Half of this earthy club is a bar and lounge, the other half a bar and dance floor. Both are small, dark and cramped which only adds to the charm. The bar welcomes all ages but skews slightly younger with a diverse mix of emo, edgy, crunchy and trendy. It's a low attitude place with HOT music and cheap drinks. Music is a highlight here. Akbar plays a wide range of really danceable stuff - ABBA to AC/DC, and the floor is packed. Thursday and Saturday are the best dance nights...the former has a very East Coast/NYC feel while Saturday is a wild mash up. You never know what to expect a good time. No cover only adds to the appeal of this place.

PROS: No cover, friendly staff, cheap drinks, low attitude
CONS: Parking

MJ's

Los Angeles, CA Bars & Clubs 03/21/08: 'MJ's: Hot East Side Gay Night Club'

Change is always hard but following the change in ownership last year, MJ's continues do deliver a good time for the boys every night of the week. I find the staff friendly and accommodating...and very busy. MJ's plays a wide range of music from hard core rock to 80's pop remixes and the dance floor is always crowded. MJ's also presents a diverse array of theme nights to suit their wide client base. Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights are their busiest with their Thursday middle eastern and Sunday asian themed nights quickly gaining momentum. I'm not a smoker but there's an outdoor patio that's a little more chill but can get pretty smoky. Yes, there's a line and a cover charge of about $7, but the eye candy, vibe and energy of the place is hard to beat. Parking can be a problem but a recent deal with Trader Joe's allows MJ's patrons to park in the lot for $4.

PROS: Great energy and music and trashy fun, in the best possible sense of the word. Nice staff who work hard to manage traffic at the busy bars.
CONS: Parking, line
