My aunt had just returned from Turkey and decided to share the delicious cuisine with me... so she took me up to Andersonville to a little Turkish restaurant she heard of. Well, the place is bigger than it seems when you walk in... and they even have a stage, where I assume a band plays on weekend nights. It was empty when we went (lunch on a Sunday)... and the place 'appears' dirty -- but that's just because it's a little run down. But there were very authentic touches to the decor that you could really learn to appreciate. The food was amazing. Granted I was a first timer, I fully enjoyed the Mucver (zucchini pancakes), Sigara Boregi (cheese pastries), the BREAD!, and the Sis kebap with yogurt. The rice was unbelievably good too. I'd love to go back.
Being new to the city, I found it necessary to purchase renter's insurance. Yolawnda was recommended to me by my property manager and she has been pleasant to work with. The insurance covers a little more than the basics and is cheap and I feel worth it. If I need something, I call her up and she takes care of it -- like automatically deducting my payment from my checking account. She did try to reel me into buying other insurance, but I declined and she wasn't pushy about it.
I dropped $100 on five items here. Granted I had one of my suit pants completely relined... they never provided a detailed receipt, so I don't even know how much I paid for the tailoring and how much I paid for the dry cleaning. One of my pants even had a little it of gunk on them that I had to scrape off with my fingernail. The tailoring was quite exquisite, I'll give them that. Needless to say, I'm still searching for a decently priced dry cleaner in the city.
Even though the property manager doesn't speak English so well, the apartment was amazing. It's a 15 minute walk to campus (which isn't bad at all) and there's actually more parking on Veteran than other areas. You'll get one parking spot per unit, though. The interior of each apartment has been fully renovated with new hardwood floors... not only this, but it's probably the most spacious apartment you'll find for the money (one bedroom can EASILY fit two double, maybe even queen sized beds). You'll get a balcony too and new kitchen appliances. There is an amazing rooftop deck that has a pool and hot tub... and on a clear day you can see the ocean off of Santa Monica to the West and the mountains to the East... I loved living here.
This salon has a Grecian ambiance, with a fountain when you walk in and columns lining the rooms. I have had many services done here -- massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, and cut and coloring. The staff always does a great job at making you comfortable, and getting you anything you need. My mom has also been going to the same hair stylist here for years -- Shari. She does a great cut for my mom... but then again it's the same thing every time. I really do recommend you check it out, because whatever you need, I'm sure they can accommodate you.
This is a one of a kind bar/restaurant. They are open 365 days a year till 4AM every day. They serve delicious food... ranging from the bread and butter that comes out first to the steak entrees that are to die for. Drinks are reasonable for being a downtown bar. They extensive martini list is worth checking out (the French martini is my favorite... topped off with a splash of champagne).
I went in to purchase a gift for a friend. There was nobody behind me and nobody in front of me. Just the girl behind the counter and myself. When I asked for the product, she threw it on the counter without giving me any other options. She asked for my money and as I was getting it out of my wallet she said "I'll be right back I have to go clean a bed"... I looked around and nobody was waiting for the bed. Maybe someone was coming in for an appointment... but I'm pretty sure the cleaning of this particular bed could have waited 45 seconds while my transaction was being completed. Instead, I had to wait for her to go do what she had to do before I could just pay and leave. I will never return to this poorly staffed salon.
Don't be fooled when you see that this nail salon looks like every other nail salon on every block in Lakeview. The staff here does an outstanding job! The prices are reasonable ($30 for a manicure and pedicure), and you get one of those "stamp cards" in which you receive your eleventh visit/service free. With your permission, they scrape that dead, rough skin off of your heels with a razor. They are very meticulous and always leave my hands and feet very happy customers. I highly recommend Linn... she also does a great job at waxing. They are also located in a great location, you can enjoy a Killer Margarita across the street when you are done.
What can I say about Ranallis? They have an extensive menu that'll satisfy whatever mood you are in. They have some kind of deal every night on food and drink -- be it $2.00 Miller Lite, MGD & Miller Hi Life on Mondays, $3.00 Well Drinks and $2 off any yard of beer ($1.00 off any 1/2 yard) on Tuesdays, $6.00 JUMBO Margaritas on Thursdays... you get the point. Food is decent, and you get big portions for what you are paying. A major plus is they deliver till 4AM during the week and 5AM on weekends, in case you have a late night/early morning craving for some good ole pizza. A minus to this is that delivery times could take an hour or longer and they never show up before their quoted time. Don't get me wrong... they aren't late, they just stay true to their word. (they also deliver beer!)
This is a neighborhood market that can suit the needs of anybody in the area. They may not have a big selection of brands, but they do carry at least one of everything. And if they don't have it they'll send you exactly where you need to go to get it. Of course, food items are a little pricier for this local market, but if you need a quick gallon of milk or fresh fruit, it's only a hop, skip, and a jump away. (beware of buying almost expired milk though... I wasn't paying attention one time and I purchased a gallon of milk that expired the next day)
