April Sevens Custom Framing
April Sevens is a great custom frame shop. The owners are super friendly and passionate about their work. They truly excel at unusually shaped hand cut mattes. They can turn a concert or movie poster into a work of art. My wife and I brought our Ketuba (Jewish marriage contract) for them to frame and we were very pleased with the results. They are also very reasonable in their pricing. If you have something that needs framing that has special meaning to you they will respect its emotional power and help you to preserve it for ever in a manner befitting its stature.
O'Donovan's
Good pub grub and decent beer selection. The real draw here is the massive dog friendly beer garden. And on Friday nights they have a magician walk around and perform card tricks for the diners. If St. Ben's neighborhood is where you call home you could do a heck of a lot worse for a local watering hole. The staff is friendly - many are recent transplants from Ireland - and the decor and the layout of the place is ideal for many types of occasions.
Nancy's Pizza
The stuffed pizza at least - that is all we ever get because it so good and gooey. The tomato sauce is sweet and a small pizza can feed two people quite well and still have leftovers for lunch the next day.
Semiramis
Everyone that we have brought here has become a regular. It is the type of place where your first dish there will likely blow all other versions of it you have had elsewhere away so you will become obsessed with it for like six months. Then you will finally feel like you need to branch out to something else on the menu and bam! you are obsessed again with that dish. For appetizers I recommend the Fattoush, Baba Ghannouj and the french fries. Yes, I said french fries - they come out crisp and hot and they spice them with sumac and give you a garlic mousse for dipping - I was immediately hooked. For delivery you can get a whole roasted rotisserie chicken delivered for under $10. My dog loves it when I do that. The owner and his staff are super friendly and accomodating as well. The atmosphere is very laid back and inviting.
Amitabul
There is no other restaurant quite like Amitabul in Chicago. Their soups and other dishes pack so much spice and herbs that I readily believe their claims that they can cure ailments. I always feel cleansed and healthier after eating Dr. K's Cure All Noodle Soup and they give you so much that there is always some for take home. Not for people with mild tastebuds but if you are adventurous this could be close to culinary religious experience.
Spice Thai Cuisine & More
This has been our Thai delivery place for four years. After some research on what the neighborhood had to offer we picked this one because it is fresh, fast and consistent. Prices are comparable to other Thai restaurants.
Tre Kronor
Tre Kronor has some of the flakiest and most delicious pastries I have ever had. I didn't know much about Swedish cuisine before we started coming here but I like trying new things and they are always really encouraging and informative. I think last time I went I had a bread called limpa (not sure on spelling) that was very good and an very tasty omelette. The restaurant is a converted house so it has quite a bit of old world charm.
Dharma Garden Thai Cuisine
Hopefully they change the name to Dharma Garden here on Insider Pages otherwise no one is going to find it. Dharma Garden does mock "meat" very well and has a wide range of dishes. Connected to the restaurant is a Thai gift shop and the waitstaff all wear traditional dresses. Sometimes they can be off on the timing of the dishes so one arrives much earlier than the other and other times we have been served dishes that are way too spicy even after specifying that we only wanted it "medium spicy" so beware. The vegetables are always very fresh and the rice is really cooked well.
Karyn's Cooked
I really like their potato soup and their sandwiches - with the jerk tofu being a particular favorite. Karyn's Cooked is a rare thing among vegetarian restaurants because the ambiance and menu seems inviting to even the most steadfast carnivore.
Handlebar
I have been here at least half a dozen times and they are always adding new things to the menu. While one time I had a dish that was too spicy, most often being adventurous when ordering has paid off for me. The beer selection is very good and the vibe might appear hipsterish but they are pretty progressive - they have an ethos and how many restaurants can make that claim. Also they have a beer garden for the warmer months which has some bigger tables.
