Sagano Sushi
This is one of the two superb sushi restaurants in Oak Park (Sushi House being the other). The rolls here are quite good though not as inventive as some of the upper-echelon sushi restaurants in Chicago. They are pricey, but understandably. The fish is very fresh, the servers are knowledgeable and attentive (Sushi House's service is not as good) and the non-fish options are also wonderful. They have a sake selection that is not too extensive, but more than most small sushi houses. They also have tables outside on the sidewalk in the summer which makes for a fresh, light, airy dinner!
Salon 212 & Day Spa
This local salon does it all...hair cuts, colors, day spa services, waxing, etc. and generally, they do it well. The only draw back is it is a bit expensive for a suburban salon. I usually only get a hair trim, never color and sometimes ask not to have my hair blow dried and it still costs over $40. The spa services are worth it though...they have a great pedicurist!
Poor Phil's Shell Bar
I don't know many other places in the Chicago suburbs where raw oyesters are a menu staple. The food here is great (though if you're looking for healthfood, this might not be your first choice) with lots of seafood, gumbos and lots of choices for the land lovers too. The atmosphere is laid back and the service is great! Perhaps my favorite feature of Poor Phils is the fantastic beer selection and bartenders and waiters who know their stuff about all of it. They are more than willing to bring you samples if you are uber picky about your beers. Cheers to that!
Chavas Tacos
Just like the big brother Chavas in the city, this Chavas keeps it real with savory and tender carne asada tacos that will blow you away. Their salsas are also something to cheer for. Let's just say I'm glad they opened a suburban version!
Chavas Tacos
The carne asada tacos here are more than enough to keep you coming back for MAS MAS MAS. This is verifiable mexican food, inexpensive and MUY flavorful. Some of the best tacos around.
New Rebozo Mexican Restaurant
This family run Mexican restaurant has been a favorite of my friends and many Oak Park and River Forest families for years. The lively atmosphere - including the owner, Paco, who is VERY lively, coming to every table to present the OH MY GOD specials - makes for a fun dinner experience every time. The margaritas are wonderful and strong, so be careful! The service here is great with friendly servers and speedy food runners. Most importantly, the food is authentic and delicious. Paco has 12 kinds of moles he rotates to put on the Fiesta Mole enchilada special including almond, macadamia nut, pipian verde and peanut. The mango tamales stuffed with goat cheese are AMAZING appetizers and some of my other favorites include Mar Y Tierra (surf and turf in a spicy sauce), Polpo de Ajo, chile rellenos and SO many more! The specials are always good, so give them a try!
Cafe Penelope
The one time I went to this restaurant I was pleasantly surprised. From the outside, I didn't think the food here would be of high quality or very fresh, but was I ever wrong! The chicken soup (which the waiter had told us was voted best in the city) tasted home made and fresh and came with a slice of soft and wonderful homemade bread. The weekly specials (that day the special was turkey cakes with cranberry slaw, which was very good) all sounded unique. The pizza at the next table over looked great-very saucy and fresh looking. The servers were all very kind and accommodating and the prices were reasonable. I will definitely be back!
Bentonara Japan Restaurant
This unassuming sushi joint does not offer much in the way of ambiance, but the sushi delivers. Their spicy tuna handroll was overflowing with fish (thankfully because it was a bit expensive). I have not had the chance to order the chirachi, but it looked better and different than most I have had. It was more of a fish salad with a tasty sauce (which i did try). The Go Alex roll also is appetizing and innovative. I would not go out of my way to dine here, but it's a great place to get take out!
Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor
This cute little ice cream parlor is one of the best around the area. Forget about Coldstone and Baskin Robins when this is so much better and its a locally owned delight! There are many flavors that are rotated onto the menu, several of which are homemade. They have great combinations on the menu like the "Brown Cow," or a TROUGH of their tastiest selections. This is an ice cream lovers paradise!! People of all ages love it and in the summer the line is so long because it is worth the wait! I highly recommend the peanut butter cup ice cream which features big chunks of seriously nutty peanut butter.
Yum Thai Restaurant
This restaurant has been a mainstay for my family for many many years. We have the pleasure of living only 2 blocks away, but I know we would continue to go every couple of weeks (previously at least once a week) even if we lived further away. You certainly would not expect to find such flavorful and wonderful thai food between a carwash and a women's workout world. The prices are reasonable for the delicious food and big portions you receive. I have several favorites including lemongrass chicken, basil chicken, beef massaman (curry), green curry, pad thai, BBQ pork fried rice, tom yum soup with shrimp, garlic squid, som tom...I could definitely go on! Plus, it's BYOB!
