Chez Zee
My in-laws enjoy going to Chez Zee for brunch when they come into town. It's pleasant atmosphere is quiet enough for understandable conversation, but there's something on the menu for all ages, which is good when the grandkids come, too. The creme brulee french toast is VERY good, but split it between two people! Other desserts there are also very decadent. Overall, very enjoyable and well recommended.
Players
This Austin tradition near the UT campus was saved from the wrecking ball not too long ago for a good reason...it would have been a shame to lose a home to some of the best burgers in town. Sure, they have that "greasy spoon diner" type of feel to them, as do the fries, but ever since Airport Haven closed, but they are terrific when the mood for just a good old fashioned burger hits. Their shakes are always good, too, but it's hard to save room for them after the burger and fries! Well recommended, although parking can sometimes be difficult.
Austin Java Co
Have always liked their breakfast burritos made with chorrizo; they have a nice flavor without being too spicy. Other breakfast choices are also quite tasty. And while this particular location is almost 15 miles from our home and the parking is always very limited, that doesn't stop us from going occasionally. We keep hoping they'll open another location in North Austin, but it hasn't happened yet. Maybe we'll get lucky someday!
Great Hills Garden Center
We've been going to Doug Reynolds at GHGC for almost 15 years now for help with our yard and landscaping. He's always given us good advice regarding a schedule for keeping our lawn in good shape throughout the year, and the plants his nursery has provided have been good, solid plants through the years. Would recommend his service.
Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler
Whenever we visit or even pass through OKC, we stop at Johnnie's for a burger. There's just something about the taste of a charcoal broiled patty that can't be beat! The cheese they use is great, and the "Johnnie's sauce" (that can be added) is really good for a change of pace, too. And their chocolate ice box pie is awesome. A great, family-friendly place to visit and chow down! Highly recommended.
University Co-Op
The Co-op has grown and changed over the years, but it's a better place now to find UT apparel than it was when I was in school 25 years ago. They also carry a wide variety of other memorabilia and supplies that it's at least fun to consider buying when you win the lottery. It tends to be crowded when school is in session, and during high season for football or other sports when more space is needed for t-shirt display. But it seems like we always find something else we "need" when we visit there!
Brick Oven Restaurant
There was a time this was a good restaurant, but our last experience there will definitely be our very last one. The service was horrible; we had to wait a while to place our order, but then it took about an hour (literally) to get it. While I wasn't feeling well before eating, I proceeded to be physically ill while there, and not one member of the staff offered any kind of assistance or showed any concern. Other members of our party were also upset by the wait, and were not thrilled with their food when it finally arrived, but no one was as bad off as I was. I won't ever be going back.
La Tapatia
Obviously not the same as another restaurant in South Austin that goes by a similar name, this restaurant provided me one of the more terrible dinner experiences I've ever had. The food was awful, with no taste but a lot of grease, and the atmosphere made me wonder which side of the border I was on and not in a good way. Will never be going back.
MD Pluckers
The food is good whether you get the wings, the chicken strips or any of the other varied items they offer. Their sweet potato "fries" are terrific and a great change of pace from regular fries. Can be busy and have a wait to get into, but it's worth it!
Austin Outdoor Power
The folks at Austin Outdoor Power have always been very helpful when we take our mower in for annual maintenance and care. They usually manage to turn around the work in a reasonable amount of time, and their pricing is also fair. Would recommend them for their service, especially if you want to keep an old, favorite lawnmower alive for a long time!
