Sunset Service is a great place to get an oil change. You can show up without an appointment and there is almost never a wait. The staff is honest and does not try to upsell you on every option.
I came in with very low oil and they gave me suggestions for how to correct this issue in the future without coming back to them.
Samovar on Sanchez is a nice place to spend an evening. The tea selection is vast, as would be expected. Be prepared to spend a little bit of money, as the prices are a little high. A pot of tea averages $7-$10.
Both the atmosphere and service are pleasant, with comfortable seating and low light.
Dolores Park Cafe is all about location. With the patio facing the park, there is great people watching on a sunny, weekend afternoon.
The food is good. Dolores Park Cafe offers a selection of sandwiches, salads and really good smoothies.
Red Hill Books is not necessarily a store to go out of your way for, but is a nice addition to Cortland Avenue. The selection is pretty good, as are the store recommendations. The staff and owner are very friendly and helpful, without being arrogant. The used books are cheaper than some of the other used book stores in the city.
The Alemany Farmer's Market is my favorite farmer's market in the city (and not just because it's in my neighborhood). It lacks the pretension and high prices of the Ferry Building and the sketchiness and scarcity of the Civic Center. The selection is always good, especially if you go early. Remember to walk around before you buy, because some vendors are much better than others. It's difficult to leave without bags and bags of fruit and vegetables because prices are so low. Also, be sure to check out the Tamale stand and baked goods stand. Both are delicious.
I love South Park, the area, in general. The park itself is nice with a ton of trees and it offers a bit of an escape from the busy downtown streets.
South Park Cafe is one of the many great restaurants in this inlet. It's definitely a little pricey, but the food is excellent, the portions are somewhat generous and the atmosphere is nice.
I have had the mussels, the croque monsieur and the ahi tuna salad. All three were excellent. Be prepared if you go with the croque monsieur, that it is enormous.
I am no expert on Cambodian food, but I do know that I like the food at Angkor Borei. My favorite items are the Crispy Rice Chips and the Charbroiled Pork Slices. Both are really delicious.
But the best thing about Angkor-Borei is that the delivery is incredibly fast.
I like Thirsty Bear, but I don't love it. The beer brewed here is pretty good, but not great. 21st Amendment's is a little better in my opinion. The sangria is pretty good, with lots of fruit.
The food at Thirsty Bear is again good, not great. I've been for lunch and dinner and have always liked my dishes, but was not blown away by anything.
My real issue is with pricing. I understand that tapas are small, but I expect that the entree side of the lunch and dinner menu will have larger portions, particularly considering the above-average prices.
I tried Sushi Boat when I had a few friends in town. Like most restaurants in Union Square, it was overpriced and mediocre.
We spent significantly more than when we go to my favorite sushi place, Ebisu, for less food and fish that did not taste fresh.
It gets 2 stars because the food was not terrible, only mediocre.
I love L'Ardoise Bistro. If I could afford to go to this restaurant every week, I would. Instead I will have to settle for the occasional visit for a special occasion. Our server was fantastic. He was always attentive to our needs without ever being overbearing, almost like a ninja. He made excellent recommendations for wine and for our meal.We had the escargot to start. I have never had this and was weary, but really enjoyed it. For my entree, I had the barramundi. The dish was phenomenal, particularly because of the addictive sauce. For dessert we had the chocolate fondant, which was rich and velvety and amazing. I would recommend L'Ardoise to anyone, particularly if you are looking for an unpretentious french feast.
