Cafe Deluxe is one of many good restaurants in Downtown Bethesda. I have eaten at this restaurant many times and have always found it enjoyable and reasonably priced. The ahi tuna steak with the roasted tomato and wasabi sauce is my favorite entree.
Check it out on Monday nights, bottles of wine are half off.
I have been to The Big Hunt countless times and it has a special place in my heart. Surrounded by pretentious, trendy overpriced bars on Connecticut Ave, The Big Hunt is a haven. The decor is perfectly cheesy and the bartenders are a little surly, but fast.
If you want to go to a normal, good bar in Dupont Circle, The Big Hunt is the place for you. Check it out on a Tuesday for Wing Night. ($0.15/piece).
I went to B44 last weekend for Dine About Town, an Open Table promotion that offers a prix fixe menu at various restaurants in town. Many of the DAT menus offered no choices and dishes that were not particularly appealing. B44 was one of the few participating restaurants that offered several choices, and I love Spanish food, so we landed there.
The selection of wine is extensive. We had a really good Tempranillo. For my appetizer, I had the mussels with pancetta, which was fabulous. The sauce was fantastic and left me wanting more. I had the paella for my entree. It was very good, but not amazing. They are generous with the portions of seafood. For dessert, I had their version of the creme brulee, which was terrible. It was way too sweet and had a grainy texture that made it inedible.
Besides my dessert, my only other complaint would be the noise. We sat inside because it was cold, and it was incredibly cramped and loud. It was impossible not to listen to the tables next to us throughout the meal.
Overall, I would definitely go again, especially on a nice day and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys good Spanish food.
Civic Center is a notoriously terrible neighborhood for lunch. Working in this neighborhood can be frustrating and my co-workers and I often have to trek several blocks to find a decent option.
This afternoon, I was introduced to Canto Do Brazil and was surprised at the quality. It is not much to look at from the outside, the interior decorating is a little cheesy, but the food is fantastic.
The lunch specials are well priced, ample and delicious. I had the #1, which was some sort of chicken dish that was flavorful, moist and very good. Six of us went for lunch and we were all pleased with our dishes.
I would definitely recommend Canto Do Brazil to others, particularly those working in the Civic Center neighborhood.
Canyon Market is one of the many slightly-expensive, organically-focused, neighborhood grocery stores. They have the standard selection of products from Newman's Own and Amy's, a solid butcher counter and a small, but fresh selection of seafood.
What makes Canyon Market stand out for me is the salad bar. It is slightly expensive, but offers fresh, quality ingredients. The croutons are great, the chicken is never dry and the greens are usually fresh and not damaged.
For residents of the Glen Park/Noe Valley/Bernal Heights neighborhoods, Canyon Market is definitely worth stopping by.
Zante Indian Pizza is a really unique concept that has been executed well. As a Bernal Heights resident, it is a great addition to the neighborhood.
The regular Indian food at Zante is pretty good, but the Indian pizza is the star. I was weary of the dish when I first ordered, but was surprised at how much I liked it.
The pizza is not a curry pizza, as many people seem to think. Instead it topped with spinach, eggplant, tandoori chicken, lamb, garlic and ginger. The dough is not naan, but not traditional pizza dough either.
I would definitely recommend Zante to SF residents, particularly if you are looking to try something new.
I went to Biscuits and Blues for the first time this weekend to see the Phillip Walker performance and had a great time. Despite its location in Union Square, this is not just a tourist trap.
The show was amazing and the club provides an intimate atmosphere perfect for the genre. The acoustics were good and the lighting was low, but not so much that you can't see your food.
I had the jambalaya and the biscuits. The server warned me that it was spicy, and she was not kidding. It was very spicy, but really good.
My boyfriend had the ribs. They were a little overpriced at $26, but were incredibly tender with pretty stellar sauce.
Overall, I had a great time. Biscuits and Blues is a little too expensive to go to all the time, but is definitely great for the occasional classy evening.
This weekend my boyfriend and I moved to Bernal Heights. Stricken by laziness and back problems, we decided to hire movers for our 1 bedroom apartment.
Golden Bay Relocation had great reviews and seemed to be a good deal, so I gave them a shot. Fernando and Francisco came right on time and got to work right away. They were incredibly careful not to damage either apartment and all of our things made it through the move safely. You can never accuse these guys of being lazy; they were carrying up to 5 boxes at a time on their backs.
My favorite thing about Golden Bay was their flexibility. They made an extra stop to pick up an armoire and applied felt to the bases of all our furniture. The extra time for these tasks cost us a pretty penny, but was a huge help. I would definitely recommend Golden Bay to anyone.
PROS: Fast and careful
Green Apple is fabulous. With endless used and discounted books, it is always well within my budget and has become somewhat of an addiction.
Book stores can be overwhelming and fortunately the staff at Green Apple does an excellent job at recommendations. On only a very few occasions have I been unhappy with a featured novel.
Also, when having book-happy visitors in town, Green Apple is a great stop to show the benefits of San Francisco.
I didn't know this existed, but apparently it does. When I had my first issue with my Jetta, I was terrified because of the service nightmare stories I had heard.
After going to Euro Motorcars, I was shocked at the honesty and warmth of the lead mechanic. This was such a relief that I am thrilled to recommend this repair shop to anyone.
