We dealt with Rick and Kathy Lundell of Carpet Pro. Following are the details of our terrible experience with this company:
1 - We signed a contract with them on May 23, 2008 for the following work (giving only a summary here).
a. Paint the complete house including basement, garage and deck
b. Carpet the whole house including stairs
c. Remove old material and Install new counter top, backsplash and floor tiles in the kitchen.
d. Remove old material from two bathrooms and install new vanities, vanity tops, shower doors and toilet fixtures. Install floor tiles in one bathroom.
e. Power wash the whole house.
f. Finish the basement (included moving water heater, installing doors, creating laundry area etc).
g. Fix the frame of the front door and install a new main door.
The work was to be completed by June 24th. The total agreement included all the labor and material. I paid them about 50% before the work got started and 25% more in the coming days.
Since that day, despite our repeated requests, they did not give us a copy of the contract. Every time we asked, they had an excuse ready. Mr. Rick promised to bring it on every visit but kept on stalling it. To this day, we don't have a copy of the contract. We feel it was part of their scam.
The problems started from day one. They tried to put a low-quality carpet and underlay and only when we caught them and confronted them, they said it??s a mistake of carpet manufacturer. On our refusal to accept the low grade material, they reluctantly put in the correct material.
Beware of their ??TEAM?. No more than two persons showed up every day although the amount of work required more people and Mr. Rick promised to put his "team" to finish the job on time. The two people who came to work never worked more than 4 hours every day. They'd show up around 11:00 am and be done by 3:00 pm. First two weeks, only one painter worked and no one else did anything significant. Their claim was once the paint job completes, the "team" will come and complete the job. We found the hard way that "team" meant one person working for about 3 to 4 hrs every day.
Kitchen : They started laying the floor and never finished it. Now the water can go in from sides and damage the floor underneath. They got paid to install a new counter top and never did. Mr. Rick kept lying to us that he's ordered the counter top and till the last day that he responded to our phones, the counter top never arrived. They were supposed to install the new top, sink, garbage disposal and faucet and did not do a single thing.
Front Door : The perfectly working front storm door was torn apart and left on the side for weeks. They were supposed to remove the damaged panels from the front door and replace them and put the storm door back. They left everything broken for weeks. Rain and thunderstorms did more damage to the front of the house. They never put it back and it is going to cost a lot more to fix what they broke.
Bathrooms : We're left with leaking vanity and shaky commode in one bathroom and nothing in the other bathroom. They laid tiles that they never finished and those tiles are already coming apart as they did not seal them. We cannot use one bathroom at all since it does not have anything except a commode.
General : They took off many fixtures from the house that they've not put back. Moldings from doors and floor were removed and never put back. Door locks were left hanging. Carpeting and Paint is incomplete. They charged me for a power-wash and never did.
Basement : They left the basement damaged and more unusable than it was before they started. They removed sheets from walls and doors that they never put back. They unhooked and moved our washer and dryer that they never hooked back. They did not do a penny's worth of agreed upon work in the basement and I actually have to pay to get it back in the condition it was before Carpet pro started working.
Garage : Everything they took off from the house was dumped in the garage. They dumped old carpet, carpet underlay, broken tiles, pieces of wood with splinters and nails, boxes, paint cans, brushes, trays, even the garbage from their own vehicles and everything they consumed during the few hours they would work. When I objected, they said that they'll clean up once they complete the work. Since they decided not to complete the work at all, the garage is left with all the junk in it. The garage is not painted as promised. The estimate to just clean that garbage goes into hundreds of dollars.
I'm taking the following actions on my part:
1 - Filing an official complaint with Department of Consumer Protection, Connecticut
2 - Filing an official complaint with Better Business Bureau, Connecticut
3 - Filing a complaint to every single department or agency that deals in this kind of things including State Attorney General's office since we feel like we??re victims of a scam.
