I am a total Wizard of Oz freak and when I first discovered Animal Instinct (back in the beanie baby crazed days), I flipped when I saw how much WOZ stuff they have!!! Let's just say that I have spent lots and lots of my vacation money at Animal Instinct over the years. It is a "required" stop on the list when we vacation in the area. I have bought everything from all of the WOZ figurines to stickers to a CD of the soundtrack and everything in between. I think one of my favorite things is the wicked witch's sister's feet which are a doorstop. They are hilarious and always bring a smile to guests. I also love my music boxes, the little trinket boxes, well - everything. You get the idea. And, oh yeah, they have TONS of stuffed animals and other toys, too. I just go for the Oz stuff, but it is much more than that. Conveniently located right on Main Street - stop by and see for yourself!!!!
The Egg & I has been in Ogunquit every since I can remember. When you're in the area and want a really great breakfast - and don't mind a bit of a wait 'cause it's a popular tourist stop - go on in to The Egg & I and you won't be disappointed. With all the competition in that area, you just know they have to be doing something right to be in business this long! A favorite place for us to have breakfast for many years and hopefully for many years to come. Generous portions, good prices, friendly waitstaff. It's all there at The Egg & I.
The Captain's Table is one of my family's favorites. We all stay in Wells every summer and one of the nights is a definite trip to The Captain's Table for dinner. Good food, great prices, friendly staff, ample parking. A good family type restaurant. And what is better than FRESH SEAFOOD right near the ocean?!? Highly recommended.
Congdon's is a MUST when you stay in Wells. Get there early because there is a line out the door. They are so much more than donuts, they have a full service dining room and serve breakfast and lunch. Everything from their omelets to the lobster rolls is SUPER! The staff is friendly and efficient. You can walk in and just go to the bakery counter - but you'll wait a while! They have bear claws, donuts (of course), bread, rolls, cookies. You can grab donuts and coffee and juice and head to the beach, which we often do. Of course, we use the drive-thru window, which is the other option! I believe they are open until around 3 o'clock, so be sure if you're going for lunch to be there by 2 o'clock. Then you can eat at your leisure. Young and old alike have a great time at Congdon's and you will NEVER come away hungry. Great staff and good affordable prices for wonderful food - they've got it covered :-)
This place is the best place I've ever stayed in Wells and I've stayed in A LOT in the last 40+ years. The Seagull Inn has townhouses, vintage cottages (like when we were kids), and contemporary cottages (a favorite of my parents who are in their 80s). It has something for everyone. Located on Route 1, but set far enough away from all the traffic that you never would realize you are so close. The contemporary cottages have everything from a screened in porch for dining to a washer and dryer in the huge bathroom. Add the ocean views, heated pools, and hot tub, and you are in heaven!!! We go in the fall - just after Labor Day, so the weather is still good and all the tourists have gone away. What could be better? Prices are comparable and they do have off season rates. Check it out!
If you know you'll be at DHMC for a loooong time, waiting for a friend or relative to have some tests or surgery, book an appointment at Split Ends and be pampered while you wait. They have a great staff who will make you feel comfy and give you what you want for a 'do. The prices are competitive with other fine salons in the area and I have always been happy with my results.
If you're a train fan, this is the place to dine in Windsor. If you're on schedule, you'll be there when Amtrak rolls through in the early evening hours - heading north.
The food is good, the prices average, fine for family dining or date night.
Not a huge place and not lots of parking, but Windsor is a nice small New England town and you can park anywhere and walk to the restaurant.
Friendly patrons and waitstaff.
The Dari Joy (or Joe's as we in my generation call it) has been a staple in BF since I was a kid.It was and is the only place in town to go to get a "creemie". My grandmother used to love their pineapple sundaes - they were her favorite. We're talking back in the 50s and early 60s!The parking lot isn't huge, but it's a good size and you can always park along Green Street or Rockingham. They get a lot of foot traffic also. Might as well stop for a treat while you're out for your daily walk.I am always happy to see that Joe's is still in business whenever I come "home" to BF to visit.
I live in Lebanon, but when I want Hallmark merch, I go to Walpole. Heidi's Hallmark seems to have everything I am looking for - from Yankee Candles to Vera Bradley bags to Webkinz - you name it and they have it. Not to mention the fabulous assortment of cards and ornaments that keep me coming back to Hallmark year after year. Heidi's staff is always friendly and helpful. There is plenty of parking. And you can always have an ice cream treat right there at the Real Scoop afterwards!
I love country stores. Newfane Country Store is a little gem tucked away in this quaint Vermont village. When you're out for a drive through the back roads, be sure to stop and browse. And be sure to look up and down and all around. You never know what treasure you might find. It has been a favorite stop of my family's for as long as I can remember.
