Shoreline Beach Cafe
This rustic grill cafe is right on the beach in Santa Barbara. The food is good, a mix of Mexican and California style dishes, with an emphasis on FRESH fish. It's a great place to take in the sunset, and you can "come as you are." Eat inside, on the patio, or on the sand! We had a party of adults and children, and it was perfect - the kids played in the sand at our feet while we enjoyed our margaritas and the sunset. Very reasonable prices.
Rivoli Restaurant
We have never had anything but great meals at Rivoli. Everything is interesting, imaginative, FRESH and well-prepared. We especially like the accommodating staff when we turn up without a reservation. Great for a romantic dinner for two, or a special meal for a family or group event. Best to book ahead - they are always busy. Dining room overlooks a pretty garden, but we often sit in the small bar area where we can watch all the action.
Trefethen Vineyards & Winery
My husband and I have had a soft spot in our hearts for Trefethen wines since we had an amazing '85 Chardonnay on our honeymoon in Maui more than 20 years ago. We had never visited the winery, but did so this summer with some friends from Utah. We had the tasting room to ourselves, and the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. We had a wonderful time, and took home some delicious wines. We will definitely go back.
Sapphire Restaurant
My husband and I have eaten at Sapphire twice, and both times we encountered hostess and reservations staff with attitudes. Once seated, however, our experience improved. Our most recent visit was August 2008 and despite a great many empty tables during the entire 2+ hours of our visit, we were told we couldn't be seated but could take first come first serve at the bar. We actually preferred that, as we could watch the action of the bartenders and servers, and service was quick and accommodating. Food is fresh, imaginative and well prepared, and we thought portion sizes were fine.
Horizon Inn
We lucked out getting a room here during the Concours d'Elegance week in August. We will definitely be back. The motel is an easy walk to the shops and restaurants on Ocean Ave. We had a peak view of the ocean from the deck. The rooms had been recently renovated and ours had a nice bathroom, a kitchenette (refrigerator and microwave oven), and a fireplace. There was a flat panel TV on the wall. My only complaint is the thin walls - we had nightmare neighbors upstairs who sounded like they were having first a wild party and then a knock-down drag-out argument with lots of shouting and tears. Bring your earplugs if you're a light sleeper. My husband snored through all the drama.
Marina Beach Motel
We've stayed at the Marine Beach Inn twice, and were totally satisfied both times. The rooms are clean and comfortable, well-maintained and nicely decorated. Some have kitchens, while others have jacuzzi tubs. The complimentary continental breakfast is more than adequate and you can borrow the motel's FREE beach cruiser bicycles. The motel is quiet despite it's proximity to the beach. We'll be back.
Wood Tavern
Wood Tavern is a wonderful neighborhood bistro. The menu isn't extensive - but everything is fresh and beautifully prepared. We often take our chances and sit at the bar, which I prefer as it offers an opportunity to watch all the action behind the bar, in the dining room, and into the open kitchen.
Epic Roast House
Epic Roasthouse is a beautiful restaurant serving the best meat dishes, as well as a few alternative selections. Food is excellent, portions are large. Great for a group - plan to share some appetizers or the charcuterie plate. The view of the Bay Bridge and across the Bay to Berkeley/Oakland is beautiful. There is also an outdoor patio.
Va De Vi Bistro & Wine Bar
Va Da Vi is a great place to go for great food in a lively (though sometimes loud) setting. There's a great vibe here, a fun outdoor patio and delicious and interesting small plates to share. Flavors span the globe - from Thai, to Italian and more. Be sure to book ahead as it is usually crowded.
Gardener
Located in the upscale shopping district on Fourth Street, The Gardener offers unique furnishings, artisanal gifts and decorative furnishings often with a garden theme.
