Great atmosphere, nice location, efficient staff and excellent Chinese food. Everything I have had here has been great, my favorites being the smoked tea duck, braised string beans, sizzling rice soup, combination fried rice and sesame bread. Da Lian is definitely not a hole-in-the-wall chinatown restaurant and you pay the price! Expensive for chinese food, at about $10/plate but expected for a chinese restaurant in the gourmet ghetto. Definitely recommend Da Lian if you are looking for good chinese food in a less sketchy environment than some of the other chinese restaurants in the area.
I've had both good and bad experiences at Thai Delight. I usually get delivery, which is relatively fast, or call ahead and pick-up. The ambiance inside is nice but small. The pad thai, pineapple fried rice, mango with sticky rice and thai iced tea are my usuals and all very flavorful and reasonably priced. The bad- on several occasions the employee has been rude, both on the phone and in person. In addition, they are cheap about ingredients, charging me an extra $1 to add a few broccoli in my pad thai. Also, while the portions are sometimes generous, other times I feel like I'm getting cheated, specifically when the mango and sticky rice comes with literally three small slices of mango! I go here because it is down the street but if you live closer to another Thai restaurant, I recommend going there instead.
Located conveniently on the corner of Shattuck and Virginia, Poulet is a great place for a quick and casual meal or take-out. The chickens are all very good, my favorite being the rosemary and lemon. The specials change daily and are often a hit or miss experience, sometimes a bit to exotic for my taste. The soup changes daily as well, my favorite being the chicken tortilla soup. They offer a decent selection of cold salads and a few dessert items which have all been very satisfying. Prices are reasonable, $10 for half a chicken which includes two breasts, a leg and thigh..more than enough to feed two people. Seating both indoors and outdoor on the sidewalk.
Cheap Boba! Coming from LA, I was used to paying about $4 for boba so the first time I saw the $1.45 price tag on the taro and strawberry milk teas, I couldn't believe my eyes! I was even more amazed that in addition to having cheap boba, it is actually very good! The boba is usually cooked perfect and the service is relatively fast. In addition to a large selection of milk teas, smoothies, and slushies, Sweethearts also sells a wide selection of asian snacks and candies including mochi. Though I have never had the food items, I hear the hamburgers are better than what you would expect from this small and often crowded store located in the asian ghetto. As they target mainly students, they are also open late, until 2AM! The combination of being close to campus, cheap and open late makes Sweethearts a great place for Cal students!
Hummingbird Cafe is a great place for students to get quick sandwiches, smoothies, coffee, etc. The owner Jamal is very nice, and the prices are student friendly. In addition to sandwiches, other highlights include the hummus, bagels, falafels and the middle eastern plate. Conveniently located north of campus in a much quieter area than the food places on Telegraph. My only complaint is that they close so early..at 4:30PM, however they are more of a breakfast and lunch place anyways..
Though it appears to be another trendy cupcake shop, in the center of Ghirardelli Square, Kara's cupcakes are unlike other cupcakes in that they are organic and don't use food coloring! While I liked the idea of 'healthier' yet still tasteful cupcakes, the 'no food coloring' meant no red velvet cupcakes, a huge disappointment as these are my favorite. The menu includes regular cupcakes and filled cupcakes with classic flavors like chocolate, vanilla, coconut, carrot, banana and raspberry and some unique flavors including java, passion fruit, banana carmel and pumpkin. Prices are comparable to other cupcake places at $3.25/cupcake, $36/dozen. Definitely recommend Kara's cupcakes to anyone who love cupcakes as much as I do.
The quintessential pet boutique for small dogs, specializing in fancy looking sweaters, fashionable harnesses, and accessories. Located in Ghirardelli Square, the store is spacious and offers a wide variety of apparel for small dogs. The store is reminiscent of 'BH Chihuahua' with everything pink, frilly, silk, even fur! Everything here is fashionable and trendy, to say the least, all the way down to the store dog 'Prada.' Considering it is located in a tourist attraction and the atmosphere of the store screams 'expensive' I was actually quite pleased with the price tags, which is competitive to other pet boutiques of its kind. The wraps and sweaters are made with quality fabrics and the selection of harnesses is unbeatable. My only complaint is that the sizing isn't very flexible, as I found my chihuahua to be in between sizes for everything they carried. Also, if your dog is more than 10-15 pounds, this store is definitely not right for you as they cater specifically to smaller breeds.
This is a great place to bring your kids for preparation or extra help with school. They offer all levels of high school math, including AP Statistics and Calculus BC, spanish, english, science, and standardized test prep (ACT, SAT Reasoning and Subject). They try really hard to get to know their students and personalize their curriculums to fit individuals needs. Prices are very reasonable at $45/hr for math and $50/hr for everything else, especially for standardized tests, which are on the order of 75 to 150 dollars these days.
The staff is all very knowledgeable, specializing in either math, science or english. The facility is broken up into smaller rooms so as to make the learning environment a much more personal experience. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Tutoring Centers.
Sushi Roku is the definition of trendy sushi. The location is great, right on Ocean Ave in Santa Monica, however the food was extremely disappointing. The sashimi wasn't as fresh as I expected, the tempura OK, and portion sizes were all very small. Everything but the atmosphere was mediocre at best, specifically the quality of the food and the service. As expected, prices were outrageous and the food was anything but authentic. If you are looking for a trendy sushi restaurant, you're better off going to Nobu in Malibu. Worst part, after already feeling ripped off when you pay your bill, parking is $7 without the tip!
I absolutely love this store and find myself taking multiple trips here per week. Heidi, Elizabeth and the rest of the staff are EXTREMELY knowledgeable about pet products and always provide useful information. Unlike other pet stores, the staff has great customer service, is helpful and actually builds a relationship with their customers. They can special order products when they aren't in stock, call you when it's available, gives treats to my dogs and on numerous occasions I have seen them help people load things into their car. Holistic Hound only carries top of the line pet food, treats and other pet products. They also carry other products including holistic pet vitamins and remedies, beds, books, toys, leashes and collars, and some apparel. This isn't the typical pet boutique, as they focus on selling items that are good for your dog, not items that will look good on your dog. The selection of pet treats is better than any other pet store I have been to and my VERY picky dogs love everything I get here. Great location(right in Walnut square, next to the original Peet's!), cozy ambiance, and amazing staff. Yes, prices seem relatively high compared to stores like Petco or Petsmart however if you take into consideration the quality, the prices are well worth it! Great customer service and excellent products make Holistic Hound a true gem! Definitely should be checked out by all pet owners.
