NOT trendy, NOT cali-mex...but Mexican food! Oh my, it is DELICIOUS! This is the best MEXICAN food in the city. Pretty much anywhere on this little strip is good, all with their unique blends of the same foods. But it's definitely authentic...the prices are Awesome! And the service is friendly even if you don't speak Spanish, lol...just stick to ordering off of the menu. They can still catch on to "holding" or "adding" though.
Oh wow, I might have to stop by here sometime soon....I'm really in the mood for their gargantuan super nachos and fresh salsa!
Talk about don't judge a book by it's cover!!! At first glance, the place looks small and old and you'll think you made a mistake. But GO IN! We'd just left Nebraska Furniture Mart not far from Home Rooms, and ended up seeing the same couch & chaise for over $200 less!!! AND it came with a recliner!! Even better, it wasn't 6-8 weeks before we would get it, it was less than 3 and that was only b/c that's when we requested it for.
What's even better, is if you don't see exactly what you want, you can look through their catalogs and they'll order it for you (again, it's much discounted from ANYWHERE ELSE that we looked in the metro area). Brands like Ashley and others. I recommend this place to EVERYONE who's furniture shopping :)
I have seen several children excel tremendously after attending this daycare! The owner is very hands on in everything from teaching the children to making them special and very loved. She makes it a point to make sure her employees show those same characteristics (or they're out of there, lol)!
But seriously, they're great about working with the parents who are trying to potty train even though they work (1 year olds can be quite stubborn), and even better at helping them build an impressive vocabulary. I think I was most impressed hearing a 2 1/2 year old name the planets of the solar system! And then re-did them in order of closest to Earth!
DECOR IS BEST THING ABOUT THE PLACE: Happy hour specials aren't the best and the drinks are quite disgusting. The specialty drink menu sounds good, they look good but I had to force myself to drink it. Should've just stuck to a glass of wine or a shot. As far as the food, don't expect regular bar or bar & grill type food. Everything will be made with goat cheese or creme de something. I'm not really sure why they advertise on the radio stations and alternative newspapers to certain crowds, but want more of a dinner crowd than a party crowd.
The waitresses were pretty cool, the decor is somewhat nice and trendy but that's about it.
WARNING: If you MUST go for the drinks (eww), you HAVE TO sit at the bar or one of about 4 tables for drinking only. Otherwise you must sit at one of the tables and order food. If there aren't any "drinking" seats left in those areas, you must stand or have your drinks outside (not a good option to mix alcohol and 100+ degree heat index).
BLAH: This place sells you on the huge portions and family style servings. That always equals different and fun. The actual taste of the food was....well....what taste. A person in my party had pizza and that was the only food that we could smell when it was brought out to the table. I guess after they made that they ran out of seasonings. Also, nothing comes with side dishes, lol....not even a salad. So if you order the chicken with mushrooms...you get chicken topped with sauteed mushrooms and juice/broth.
And what's up with the side of meatballs. I expected a family sized side and got one big meatball. The salads on the other hand, are big enough to share.
So, go here if you want a different type of dining....with a pretty good pizza or specialty drink. Anything more, find another place.
NICE HANGOUT: Cool music, very sophisticated atmosphere & down to earth staff. Great place to hang out, especially as a starter to a night of club hopping. Food gets Thumbs DOWN...drinks get TWO THUMBS UP! These just might be the strongest drinks in K.C.! Really good specialty drinks too, both flavor and presentation
Warnings: If you're going alone, just beware most people there are in groups.
If you go too early like during happy hour, might be kind of empty (ok if you're w/friends plus no cover). If you go too late you'll have to wait outside in line.
Bartender & waitress very attentive & attempted to make sure you felt a buzz after even your first drink :D
I am beyond impressed! This is one of the few places that will check your car out for free. There's a Firestone right across the street and they charge $95 just to tell you what's wrong with it....and that doesn't even include the high priced repair.
Meineke checked the car out and told me everything that was wrong. They didn't try to rip me off and print out a long list of everything I needed then give me a price. The mechanic actually talked to me like I was a friend and told me what the problem was. He gave me 3 different options on what I should do and the prices of each option. And he didn't try to convince me that the highest priced option was the best. He was very honest by giving me the pros and cons of whatever route I was considering. I had NO IDEA that mechanics like that still existed.
The only negative is they are usually very busy so you might need to call and schedule an appointment days ahead or end up letting your car sit and wait. But I took that as a good sign that so many people were willing to wait; I figure they must be regulars and trust these guys.
Oh yeah, I also must be honest and say that the waiting area isn't the nicest. That might not bother most people since they'll just drop their cars off, but I was waiting and had a newborn with me. I didn't want his blanket to touch anything! I ended up calling husband and making him come and get us so we could wait at home in comfort :)
I've only been to the plaza location one at night, but I've been to the Prairie View Rd (Zona Rosa) location for brunch and it. is. awe.some!!! Seriously, the $16 is a terrific DEAL...and this coming from a very frugal person, lol. EVERYTHING looked and tasted as if it was prepared by an actual chef, rather than a hot order cook like one might expect from a restaurant and "bar."
And even though we went on a holiday, the service was still fast and they kept fresh hot food out on all of the different sections. This is not your typical buffet, this is quality, delicious, mouth watering food...mmmmm!
Ummm, the sign says 35 & over, but I think sometimes it's 30 & over so I was able to get in, lol. It's definitely an older crowd with a big age range. I'd say the majority of the peope inside were about 33-45...maybe a few years older. Anyway, this is the type of crowd that loves to dance...not booty shake, but gentlemen ask women to DANCE. Two step, slow dance, etc. Be ready to dance if you're a woman or man, somebody is going to ask you! There's also a lower section where people play chess, a picture booth is set up and I'm not sure what else. The restrooms aren't fancy but they are probably the cleanest that I've EVER seen in ANY club. And that's without an attendant in there! What a welcomed surprise that was :)
The d.j. is very good, the waitresses are fast and very accurate, and the doormen are good about getting the crowd in quickly. Definitely go if you're over 35 and in the mood to really dance and people watch.
Very cute set-up for it to be in the building of the old honky tonk bar Becky's lol. Such a transformation! They couldn't make it magically bigger b/c of the hill that it's on, but it's still nice. The bartenders work their booties off all night. There's a room in the back for parties that's almost as big as the main area of the club...it's a nice escape after making your way through the maze of tables to get from the bar to dance floor or restroom. There's a kitchen too that you can order for the party room, or just to have a bite to eat.
All in all, the cover charge is low (90% of the time $5), the drinks are mixed well but a little high compared to other places in the area, but the crowd is laid back and just people who want to get out but not necessarily ready for a the arena sized, college crowd places.
