In my recent visit to Merced, I looked up Thai restaurants and based on all those raving reviews on Thai Cuisine II, we decided to try it out. I must say both my friend and I were more than disappointed! The food was mediocre at best and the service was very lousy. Now we've learned not to believe all those "five-star" reviews as they could very well be posted by those who have "special interests" in the restaurant like the owner herself or her family members.
On the sanitation aspect, this place needs to be shutdown for violating health code!
One thing for sure is we will never come back to this restaurant and would NOT RECOMMEND it to anyone we call "friend".
Among all Thai restaurants in Merced, Thai Star seem to be the better one. Thought it still is not the best Thai food I've ever had. The service was good and it's relatively cleaner (better sanitation) than other Thai joints in town. The owner and the main chef is a Thai person. So, expect authentic Thai foods here.
I was taken here by a friend because I have a taste bug for Thai foods. However, after a couple of times dining at this place I've come to the following assessment:
1. Sam Cafe works hard to please customers.
2. The foods at Sam Cafe is mediocre - no terrible but not that great either.
3. Sam Cafe offers an ambient that is more attractive to ethnic young folks. It has a convertible dancing floor with Karaoke.
4. Sam, the owner, is a friendly guy but also a very business-oriented guy.
5. Sanitation is questionable.
I wish Merced county implements the Grade Rating system like LA and San Diego counties. Many restaurants in Merced are NOT up to public health codes and have been getting away with many violations. This goes to show the lack of public safety interests by the governments in this region.
This restaurant is no longer in business. The bad economy and high leasing costs have driven it out of business. I would have given this place a three-star rating.
