I went here after work one evening looking forward to a good drinks and an even better meal. While the drinks were up to par, the food was not so great. The service was okay, but the restaurant was pretty empty which may have worked in our favor. Overall, if you are looking for authentic Mexican food--this is not the place, but if you are looking for good drinks at a cheap price--this is the place! Recommend for drinks only!!
My friends and I went here for a birthday celebration and the food was absolutely excellent! If you are not into spicy food, make sure you ask about the heat that comes in a some of the dishes, it may be too much for some to handle! The prices are great, and the portions of food are almost too much to eat in one sitting. We had a few coupons for the drink specials, which you can get offline, which is great as well. The atmosphere is relaxed, the owner is adorable, he makes sure everyone feels welcomed. Make sure you get there early, especially on the weekends, the wait time was a little long, but we were able to order drinks while we waited so we hardly noticed. Would definitely recommend this place!
I always enjoy my eating experience at Calypso--good food, good drinks at a reasonable price--who can beat that? There pulled BBQ chicken sandwich is the best--the chicken is tender, the sauce is very good, and the bread (which is the best part) is soft and warm with a little bit of sweetness to balance out the spice of the sauce. They also serve a plantain nachos dish (w/or w/out chicken) that can feed at least four people and is the star on the appetizer menu! Calypso, although a little hidden in Harper's Court, is a great restaurant-- I recommend it for all!
I have only had two dishes at this restaurant--the red curry and the green curry dish. Each comes w/a sizable portion of rice and the different soups contain a variety of vegetables and spices; the red curry has a bit more heat than the green, but both are great in their own right! Thai also offers a variety of vegetable dishes, so there is a little bit for everybody. The best time to go is during lunch, for around $6 you can get an entree w/ a side of soup--although the menu says dine in only, you can still get the lunch special to go. I would recommend!
Shelley's offers Chicago style food in a small town setting. They have everything from Chicago style hot dogs, to Black Angus Bacon Burgers, to Greek chicken platters. There Philly Chicken sandwich is tasty and there nacho supreme is enough to feed at least two people. Shelley's has a variety of lunch specials, making good food accessible at a reasonable price. They also serve breakfast sandwiches (bagels w/turkey, egg, cheese, bacon, ham) made whatever way you like. I would recommend this place to others!
This Country Store is part butcher shop, part restaurant, which makes for an interesting experience. Not only can you buy fresh meat, you can have it cooked to order right there in the shop! For the red meat lovers, they have whole and half slab baby back ribs and rib tips, They also serve BBQ chicken and pork chops; the sauce is excellent! The prices are reasonable and the service is great as well. Keep in mind that the lunch menu and dinner menu are different; dinner is served between 4-7 pm. Nonetheless, this is a great out of the way butcher shop that serves great BBQ!
If you are looking for tasty wine at a reasonable price, Sycamore Winery is it. There are a variety of wines available for tasting and purchasing. The wine tastings are free w/ a purchase of a bottle, otherwise they are $6 for eight tastings. All of the wine is made on site and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. My favorite is the sangria, and I also enjoyed the strawberry and apple wines. There is also a tasting room in the back which is reserved for private affairs. So if you are in the mood for a relaxed wine tasting for two, a girl's night out, or a corporate event--Sycamore Winery is the place. I would definitely recommend this winery.
This salon specializes in ethnic hair care, and I went in for services under the recommendation of a friend. The stylist who worked on my hair was great--she was welcoming and professional and she listened. Many stylists feel they are the professional and that the client should have no in put. This was not the case with the stylist that I worked with. The salon caters to both women and men; if you want color, make sure you let your stylist know in advance because they do not have it in stock.
After hearing that there are no good dentist in my area, I was more than pleased to find Dr. Olson. The office is located in downtown Dekalb, and is in walking distance of all the cool shops--which I love. The office is small, the receptionist/dental assistant is pleasant and courteous, always calling a day in advance to confirm appointments and I never have to wait upon arrival. The most important part is that all of the dental work that I have received thus far has been excellent. I undergoing a root canal, a cleaning, and a filling--not in one day--I have had no pain. I am so pleased with the service provided and I would recommend Dr. Olson for adults and children.
I love shoes and I was pleasantly pleased when a shoe boutique opened on in the Bronzeville area. Most of the shoes in the store are not my taste--glittery stilettos and high boots. I am also not too impressed with the quality of the shoes--they are definitely over priced! The owner and the ladies working in the store are pleasant offering refreshments to all of their customers. The decor, while not my taste--too much pink--makes it visible, which is necessary because of the location, and definitely has the potential to bring in customers. Happy that a shoe boutique has come to the area, not pleased w/the shoes--the purses are cute and I found many of them to be priced in accordance with quality. Would recommend, but don't expect the style or quality that you would find in a North Side boutique.
