I am a single parent, and my two sons are away at college so when I needed to have a flapper replaced on one of my toilets I decided to call Tindall and Ranson. I called last week to schedule an appt. and was told they were booked for a week. I didn't mind because I have two more toilets in my house. I asked how much it would cost and they told me the labor would be $69.00 and whatever the cost of the flapper would be. I figured a flapper would be around $5, and I had a $25 coupon which they sent in the mail. I thought, OK, I could probably do this myself but the cost was reasonable for a plumber to come out and do it for me. They were supposed to arrive today between 12 and 2, and they finally arrived after 3 p.m. While the plumber was here, I asked him to look at my other toilet since I bought the two toilets at the same time and I thought I would save another labor charge in case the other flapper needed replacement. He told me that the other flapper was in bad shape and that I should probably replace it also. I agreed, since I thought the extra charge would only run me another $5 or so.
When the technician presented me with the bill (including the $25 rebate) I nearly had a heart attack. The total bill for changing 2 flappers was $243.00 - almost the cost of a brand new toilet!!!!!
I was totally in shock and asked how much the charge was for a flapper. Get this: he told me without blinking an eye that the charge for each flapper was $87.00!!
Then I immediately called Tindall and Ranson, and I told them I was outraged and asked them how can they charge such a rediculous price. I was asked if the "technician" who installed the flappers told me how much it would be before starting the work and I told her no he did not. He even apologized to me for not telling me the price.
When I later asked to speak to the owner, the owner gave me an ultimatum: either I pay the full amount or the technician will uninstall the two flappers!!!
I have always used Tinadall and Ranson in the past and I gave them alot of my business, but that didn't sway the owner one bit. He said either you pay or we take the flappers back.
Since I didn't have enough money, I had to charge the amount and I now regret it. By the way, after the technician left I called the plumbing supply store where I originally bought the two toilets and asked how much each flapper would cost if I bought it from him, and he said $11.00 each (they are Toto flappers). When I told the supply store how I got ripped off, he couldn't believe it himself. I never complain on these sites, but now I feel I must say something. It's not even the price, which in and of itself is a total ripoff: it's how I was treated and taken advantage of (probably because I am a single female). I WILL NEVER USE TINDALL AND RANSON (THEY SHOULD CALL THEMSELVES TINDALL AND RANSOM BECAUSE THEY HOLD YOUR FLAPPERS FOR RANSOM) AGAIN AND I URGE ANYBODY OUT THERE WHO IS CONSIDERING USING TINDALL AND RANSON TO NOT TRUST A WORD THEY SAY. I HOPE THEY LOSE ALOT OF BUSINESS FOR TRYING TO BE GREEDY. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND.
