I've been very lucky and have found some very nice estate pieces at the A Antiques & Collectibles store. The furniture, painting and jewelry I've gotten there is the envy of many of my friends. I seem to always time my visits just right when they're putting out fresh stock. This is a great place with helpful people to answer any question you may have.
I'm really starting to take a good look at consignments and thrift shops. Before, I would only ever donate to them; I'd never consider shopping there. Recently, I've started taking a much closer look and have discovered that some of the consignments actually have pretty nice things. The Second Tyme Around Shop in particular, had some very nice antique glass pieces I wound up buying. I've got to open my eyes more and take a closer look. I was impressed by this shop and what they offered. I'll have to pay closer attention to similar shops.
The Teen Challenge Thrift Store is one of the stores we went looking for my kids Halloween costumes. They had a pretty large selection to choose from, and not just bits and pieces you throw together. I was surprised by the size of the store and the amount of things they had. We were able to purchase the kids costumes and some backup options, just in case.
My nephew volunteers at the Boys Republic Thrift Shop and I couldn't be more proud of him. He's been working there for about a year and has such a sense of humility and service about him. The thrift shop serves the local community and provides so much more than just material things. Our family has donated clothing, furniture and musical instruments there. We've even donated canned food during their Christmas Open House. The Boys Republic Thrift Shop does a lot more than just selling things; they build character to those that work there and give dignity to those that shop there.
The ladies in my golf club decided that instead of throwing a community garage sale, we would organize amongst ourselves and take everything we would have sold during the garage sale and just donate the lot directly to the Rancho Thrift Shop. They are the corresponding thrift store attached to the Ranchos Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey that provides free clothing to patients in need, as well as supporting their cause. We couldn't have been more pleased with the 6 carloads we brought over.
My teenage niece will only weawr YMI Jeanswear to the dismay of my brother. He makes me laugh when I remind him that when we were growing up, he had his own little quirks. I don't find anything out of the ordinary with the YMI line, but the kids do, so I guess that's all that counts. I've gone clothes shopping with my niece before and she's had a lot to say about the line. They seem pretty standard to me, but I'm not a teenage girl.
The Amvet Donation Center is one of the non-profits we'll donate things to during the year. We typically donate the kids old toys, musical instruments and housewear items rather than clothing. They do such good work there and we want to help them out as much as possible. It's always been a pleasure donating our larger items to them since we know how much they do in return.
I've only been to Burnett Consignment and Collectibles once, looking for some figurines for my mother. They have an interesting collection of a lot of stuff. Some of their items I've seen elsewhere at similar pricing and other items (more in the antique catetgory) I'd never seen before. They didn't have any of the figurines I was looking for, but I nevertheless enjoyed my time perusing the store.
Our family does our yearly cleaning in the winter to make room for all the new things that normally make their appearance around the holidays. When we clean out our closets, we'll pick several thrift stores to donate everything. Most recently, we chose La Ranita Thrift Store in Downey. They're a smaller thrift, but run by some decent people trying to make a difference. I hope our donation helps bring in money to further their cause.
We used Clean Strike for the rental items of some tables, chairs and a swamp cooler last summer. I found their prices to be reasonable and liked that they included the delivery and pick up fees in one flat rate.
