On Saturday afternoon, 6/29/13, with the temperature hovering around 108 degrees, our residential A/C decides to blow hot air! Not good! I had just a few days earlier began a service plan with the Beyer Boys. First mistake! My wife called, and being subscribed to a service plan you go to the top of the list, so three hours later the serviceman arrives. That is to be expected on a day like Saturday was. Second mistake!
After his checkup he determined that the Capacitor & Relay needed replacing, and the unit needed freon, which came as no surprise. He told me the approximate costs involved, and I told him to do the work. I didnt know the costs of all these different A/C items, and what are you going to do when you are standing outside in 108 degree weather and your A/C does not work? Third mistake!
He performed all his little chores and presented me with a bill for $541.84. My wife gave him a check, the only thing that wasnt HOT, and he left and we began to cool off somewhat.
I am writing this on Monday, 7/1/13. Because I am a curious person, and because I detest being taken advantage of, I decided to get two quotes from local A/C contractors (we live in Seguin, TX).
The first one came in with a quote of $252.00. I still have this quote on my voice mail. The second one quoted me $305.74. The lady who gave me this quote stated that they managed to live comfortable lives charging these prices. I have this quote in hard copy. NOW I knew that my three mistakes were REAL!!
I cant see any acceptable reasoning behind this display of extortion. Guess we just paid for another two or three TV advertisements.
Guess what? Tomorrow I intend to cancel my service contract and send a copy of this to the local paper, among other consumer reporting agencies. Perhaps I can keep some other poor fool from being taken advantage of. That will be my first step toward trying to right my three mistakes!
And remember, all IS NOT always greener! Perhaps I would do better to shop local. Perhaps you folks in San Antonio would do better to shop Seguin.
Good luck. It is a dog eat dog world out there. Dont give your money to the dogs.
