I saw Dr. Melissa Quan earlier today to diagnose numbness in my hands and feet. I found her to be ery professional and knowledgable. She performed a series of tests on me that I thought were sensible and logical and the results of which were quite informative. I plan to continue woking together with Dr. Quan to treat my condition and I am confident that she will be a good partner to me as I seek treatment. I would recommend her wholeheartedly.

Listens very well, very sharp, very positive interpersonally. Very accurate on histories of symptoms. Friendly, enthusiastic, and apparently empathetic on interview. However, when it became clear that her equivocating analysis was not firmly grounded, and was in conflict with the opinion of a specialist in the area, and the literature I sent her from NIH, she made not attempt to modify her notes and simply recommended, by telephone message from her nurse, rather than in writing, that WE FIND a neurological specialist who knows this area. We have twice asked to have that recommendation in writing, but to this point have received nothing.

I would not recommend Melissa Quan DO at Duke Neurology to any person wishing to seek anywhere close to a real diagnosis. From the beginning, the nurse did not listen to my request to speak up since my husband is hearing impaired. She was very cold, impatient and shared no empathy for my husband who also has expressive aphasia and coordination issues. With the economy in such poor condition, if you don't want to serve hands-on with patient care, please step aside and let someone who can be empathetic work. Especially in a field where the diagnosis and treatments are often unsatisfying.

When Melissa Quan, DO finally assessed my husband she simply stated that his current condition was a result of stress and that he needed extensive psychological counseling. Really? The man nearly died from infection and all you have to offer is counseling? She even went so far as to say that his past and current "manifestations" of poor coordination, expressive aphasia, double vision and generalized weakness could even be due to childhood abuse and gasp, sexual molestation as a child....When and how did this become an exceptable explanation of his severe neurologic complications? I am discouraged that this "doctor" is out there in the general public wasting people's times, hopes and money on such ridiculous medical explanations.

I am saddened greatly that others seeing this physician will not seek a second opinion and simply waste thousands of dollars seeking psychiatry testing and couseling. I am appauled that this is the best that could be offered by Duke. I expected more honestly. No formal diagnosis could be made, no answer was given when asked how long this was expected to continue and every question was met with "it is an emotional manifestation."

In addition we were encouraged to consult with the Mayo Clinic in Florida and Minnesota. Seriously?? Her assessment lasted a whole of five minutes and did not give ample time for my husband to respond to her commands. A simple request to check his ears for infection was met with, "that is bit far from my speciality."

No, I am not pleased with my husband's visit and will not be returning. What an embarrassment.
