As previous reviewers have said, this zoo does not have a lot of animals, nor are they housed in the most plush of environments. They are in small cages and exhibits, but are very well cared for due to the small size of the staff. We were there for the July 4th weekend this year and everythign is in good shape from the hurricane clean up. I did not see any safety issues other than when my kid put his hand in a bird cage (he is too quick for me) and got nipped.

You will have seen this zoo featured in the National Geographic Channel special and series "The Little Zoo that Could". They have been gifted some land and are planning on rebuilding further inland away from frequent hurricane issues.

Animals featured are several tigers, panthers and large cats; kuwaiti (which I have never seen in a zoo so that is neat.); wolves, monkeys and assorted reptiles and birds. THey also have a little petting zoo area and they breed and release rabbits, so expect to see some of them hopping around loose.

THere is a small gift shop/snack area and the zoo is clean, though small.

PROS: Quick trip
CONS: If you are looking for a big zoo experience, this is not it.

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is just a step up from the local county fair. They don't have a large number of animals, and they ones that are there are very pitiful looking. Even the big animals, like the cats and giraffes are just kept in small wire cages. It was very sad, and not an enjoyable zoo experience. I would not recommend this zoo to anyone. I think it gives children the wrong idea about what a zoo is all about. The animals looked imprisoned and not comfortable. Find somewhere else to go to the zoo!

I had the misfortune to be in the very first group to visit this zoo since Hurrican Ivan. There were too many accidents waiting to happen, literally. No joke, a tiger cub ( an older cub very big) reached out under the fencing attempting to swipe my duaghters leg as she walked by... it would have reached her had I not pushed her out of the way. The staff kinda acted like it was daughters fault. But they had no signs posted to not walk that way. Then the wolves got out of their cage. Yes... got out of their cage... and went running past us. Staf never said a word. That is NOT acceptable and we will never return out of simple safety concerns.
