We travel in from RI to shop at this store which stocks quality titles on a variety of subjects and in a depth not possible with most new bookstores, and usually not seen in most used bookstores. As someone who travels and shops for books all over the country I would compare it to any of the great academic bookstores in Berkeley, Chicago, or NYC. I think some who go into this shop just won't get it, but for those who still think and demand something besides the usual slop one see in most bookstores nowadays this store is among the best at what it does. Evidently others besides some of the reviewers on this list do as well as I noticed last time I was there that they won "Best used bookstore in Boston" award for 2006. It is also interesting to note that this store is home to Black Widow Press, one of the more interesting small poetry presses in the country. Probably also explains why their poetry section is comparable to the Grolier Poetry Bookshop in Cambridge. I heartily recommend this store.

The funny thing about this bookstore is that you're not really expecting it to be where it is - in between the theater district, the Boston Common and an area that is better known for upscale fashion. Nevertheless, this little hole in the wall shop is a great find for the area. THey have rare books and inventory stored somewhere outside of Boston. They also have a really neat window display that changes from time to time.

This book store is unlike any big chains such Barnes and Noble or Borders. If you like the atmosphere of an older, warmer bookstore, you'd like this place. I personally could spend hours in there. You can get lost browsing the unique titles. They have a lot of different books that you might not easily find at a chain. On the flip side, you might not find that new Dean Koontz book here. They do have current titles, but it's mostly rarer and older books.

Commonwealth Books is an upper-end used book store. They have a great selection of history books here. I have found lots of interesting books at this store. The books are all in great condition and they also sell some rare books. The store is very nice. No dingy old smelling used bookstore here. The books are more expensive than some other used bookstores but the books are all high quality books in excellent shape. This is a great place to go on a rainy day.

PROS: great selection, nice atmosphere, quality books
CONS: more expensive than other used bookstores
