Pearl Paint has a decent selection of art supplies, as well a nice craft section. There are 3 floors of arty goodness awaiting you. In general, I have found the staff to be quite helpful and knowledgeable, and have never had a problem finding staff or asking for help. They have a lovely selection of exotic and handmade papers in the bottom/basement floor that is really fun to browse. The store itself doesn?t feel especially welcoming, it seems a bit warehouse like, but there is a good selection of products at fairly reasonable prices, and it is worth a visit. It is located right in Central Square, so it is very convenient to get to.
PROS: good prices, good selection
Even though I am lactose intolerant, I can still find many delicious treats at Christina?s. They have a great selection of sorbets made of fresh fruits (like Papaya or Honeydew Melon). When I have LactAid I make sure to try the Mexican Chocolate ice cream, which is rich and creamy chocolate with cinnamon and other wonderful spices. Since Christina?s has a fantastic spice shop next door, you know all the spices are top of the line. They have an astounding array of ice cream flavors to choose from, there is truly something for every ice cream lover you are with! I really appreciate the fact that they have a nice selection of dairy free ices, and will definitely be going there as often as possible to get my afternoon treats. Their prices are not too bad, and it is a good value for the money!
PROS: Great flavors, great dairy free options
Sherman's books is a decent little bookstore in Boothbay harbor, ME. The downstairs is filled with toys, art supplies, gifts, and souvenirs. The upstairs is where the books are, as well as more art supplies.
The books are fairly standard, although they have a great section of books on Maine. Their bargain books are great, sometimes you can find a really good deal here.
Their magazine selection is pretty good too. Boothbay Harbor is a small town and sometimes it is hard to find good magazines. Sherman's has many of the ones I was looking for on a recent visit.
The staff is nice, and very helpful. they will often do special orders if asked.
Artist and Craftsman is one of my favorite art supply stores in Central Square. The staff is very, very friendly and the selection of supplies is great. It has almost everything I need for my needs. Their carving (rubber and linoleum) section is quite good, and they have a small but nice selection of rubberstamping supplies. It's a fairly large store, and I enjoy going there.
This is one of my favorite stores in JP, and well worth a visit. It has everything you could dream of for gifts; from postcards and stationary, to clothes, to doodads, to just plain fun stuff! The windows are decorated nicely with those great paper star lamps, and are always fun to look at. I just love this store and their eclectic mix of fun things!
Boomerangs is a fantastic charity shop located in the center of hipness in Jamaica Plain. Their sales benefit the AIDS Action committee and they have a fantastic selection of clothing and other things to choose from.
I go mainly for the clothing, but I have friends who shop there for furniture almost exclusively. They get fantastic stuff in! Recently, before a wedding, I managed to score an Ann Taylor dress, with the original tags still on it. It was originally $79 dollars....at Boomerangs it was $8!
The staff is very friendly, the clothing is well stocked, well marked and sorted and wonderfully priced. The stock changes quickly, so it's best to visit often.
There is another location of Boomerangs in Brighton which has many toys and books for children. Boomerangs also has an auction site occasionally, where you can bid on great items. All in all this is one of my favorite stores on Centre Street, and I always walk out with something great.
Harvest Coop is one of my favorite health food stores. The staff is, in general, extremely helpful. You can find your usual assortment of health food products here, as well as some hard to find items. Their sales tend to be pretty good. And, best of all, its a local business, so when you shop here you arent putting money in the pockets of some huge corporationyoure keeping it local.
Patrick and his crew at West Cork Auto are among the most trustworthy and honest mechanics I have ever met. I have been burned before by shady mecahnics, but after bringing my car to West Cork Auto twice now, for two different issues, I can honestly say that these guys have got my business for as long as I am in Jamaica Plain. They are fair, honest, and very trustworthy, and I do not hesitate to recommend them to anyone and everyone.
PROS: honest, trsutworthy, fair
Boing is the toy store to visit in JP! It is great fun, even if you don't have kids. They have a dizzying selection of toys, games, and fun stuff for all budgets. The staff is incredibly friendly, and always has great suggestions. They know their toys!
The store itself is just amazing. It's packed with toys, and everywhere you turn there is something new. There are a lot of quality toys here...not a lot of junky toys. There really is something for all price levels; you can spend $5 or $500.
It's a fun store to bring your kids, as they are very welcoming and have a lot of demo toys out. They area very patient and kind staff too! I love this store.
I love Housing Works Bookstore and Cafe. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love it. It is tucked away in a little cobblestone alley/street in New York, and has one of the best selections of used books I have ever seen. It's not as big as the Strand of course, but has a great selection.
They have fantastic dollar racks, where you can buy really good books for just $1. These aren't crappy books either! Most of them are current popular fiction, Oprah's Book Club selections, and more. The selection is constantly changing, so if you live or work nearby it is a good idea to stop in every couple of days.
The cafe is also nice, though I mostly spend my money there on books. They have a good selection of snacks and great coffee. This review is making me miss NY!
