Armandos is a great barber shop on the corner of SR 23 and Edison road, in the little shopping center. The barbers there are extremely skilled - why else do you think that Lou Holtz, Bob Davie, Digger Phelps, Tyrone Willingham, and other Notre Dame coaches get their hair cut there! They are very organized and keep a tight schedule when it comes to appointments - you rarely have to wait! I even sighted an ND celebrity in there once!
I have been a customer of Kings Barber Shop for 4 and a half years... and they are the "Kings" of the $10 haircut! While you don't get the extreme salon-type people, you do get a nice, old fashioned barber shop atmosphere, complete with spinning swirl on the outside! The barbers are always polite, friendly, and have plenty to say about the daily events in the little town of Urbana/Champaign. Check this place out if you want a great, cheap haircut! No appointment required!
Te-Shurt is a great Champaign jewel for creating your favorite bar-crawl shirts! When I organized my bar crawl, I wanted blue shirts with a nice David Hasselhoff picture on them and the quote "I'm not from here" below. Te-Shurt made me exactly what I wanted, at under $10 a shirt after I ordered over 50 of them! The price was right, and the service was great - they are the best at creating custom shirt designs in Champaign.
I went into The Music Store on Irving Park to find accessories for my Yamaha Motif ES keyboard - they had a great selection! Prices were average for a music store, but as with all music stores, if you bargain with the employees like I did, they will sell anything to you at a discounted price! The location of the business is a little questionable, but the quality of the employees is better than any Guitar Center or Sam Ash. Overall, if I am going to buy another music instrument related product, I will hit up The Music Store!
Stop & Shop is located on the corner of North Ave & Sedgwick, and is not a very impressive store. The clientele has a hard time understanding English, and the products at the store are of very cheap quality (I have bought 2 corkscrews there, the first one lasted 2 bottles of wine, and the second broke after 4). But you can't expect much from a Dollar Store - they do have good cigarette sales from time to time! Overall, your money would be better spent at a gas station.
I went to second city a few weeks ago for a nice comedic night out... I was not particularly impressed! While the audience involvment in some skits was decent, overall the quality of the comedy paled in comparison to the stand-up comics I have seen. The good news was, the more the waitress came around, the more drinks I was served, and the funnier that the skits became!
Sam's is pretty much the largest liquor store I have ever been to. It could be compared to an entire supermarket devoted just to beer, wine and liquor! The wine selection is amazing - almost half the store is devoted to it! Also, employees are good at making drink recommendations if you give them just a few requirements. Liquor selection is also top notch - from Skol vodka to Louis the XIII cognac... very impressive. Plenty of cold & room temperature beer to choose from as well, with an assortment of foreign and small domestic marques. Great place!
While hard to locate (The Wine Discount Center has a tiny sign in an old, beat up building as its only advertisement), this store has a great selection of normal and fine wines at lower-than-chain store prices! When I bought a bottle of Kimberly Crawford there, the clerk was extremely helpful and knowledgable, and she informed me there are free wine tastings every Saturday! I really enjoyed my experience at the Wine Discount Center and will definitely return for future wine purchases.
The Up Down Tobacco Shop in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago is located just south of North Avenue on Wells Street. The employees are extremely helpful - when I asked for a specific variety of pipe tobacco, they found it for me immediately, and then recommened an assortment of others based on my tastes. Also, the selection of cigars, luxury cigarettes, and lighters is clearly and ergonomically laid out, so the customer can get a great view of whatever they wish to take home! An A+ experience!
