This is a nice family- owned and operated restaurant. The food is delicious and prepared as ordered. I always love the blackened tuna. It is better than any I have ever had. The atmosphere is nice. Nothing fancy, but accomodating. There are booths and tables. It is a local favorite for food and drinks. The staff consists of family members and others. They are always friendly and courteous. I believe they keep the kitchen open until close because this is a lounge also. The restaurant is one big room that consists of the bar and the dining area. After the restaurant area dies down they close it off but you can still order food. Ther are a few booths on the bar side, too. This is a smoke-free establishment because of a new ordinane passed in the city, but they have a small enclosed slot machine room that is NOT a smoke free area. The prices are extremely reasonable. They have a wide variety of items on the menu-lots of appetizers, the onion loaf is really good, steak, chicken, ribs and seafood, too. Highly recommend. I am giving them five stars because I have always had a great experience eating and drinking here!
My daughter went to preschool here when she was four. It was her first experience in this type of setting. She LOVED it. It is a bit different then what I was used to with my son at a different preschool. The concept here is more of a learning throgh play then an academic preschool. But, for my daughter this was more her thing. The teachers, I believe there are five, are very caring and supportive. The kids are assigned a homeroom teacher. I think there are about 12 kids in a class. The kids switch to different classrooms about every twenty minutes for a different activity and then resign back to there classroom for a snack. The kids are taught songs and manners amongst other activities. They are encouraged to play and use theie imaginations. I really wasn't sure if my daughter was actually learning the academics she would need for Kindergarten because I was used to a stricter regemin with my son. Now that she is in Kindergarten I see she di just fine in that preschool atmosphere. She reads chapter books and does very well in school. It was nice she wasn't "pushed" to excel in preschool and was able to just enjoy the experience. The price for a month of school at three days a week for 2 1/2 hours was 95.00. I believe this is about the same as in most other schools in the area.
This is a fun hangout for the over 21 crowd. The place is clean and the service is good. On weekends they will have local artists play. Tim Ullom is a regular performer with his guitar and vocals. The interesting thing about this bar is it has a front bar and a back bar. On special occasions they will have someone playing in the front bar and someone in the backbar. For instance, the Mardi Gras party they had Tim Ullom in the back and a band Twice as Nice in the front. It is always packed at these "theme" parties. The place is clean and you see all types of people. On specail occassions they will have a cover charge, but it is only three bucks. They sometimes have drink specials that are priced on the cheaper side. The St. Patrick Day party that is coming up will be a great one too because of the Irish theme of the bar. My ONLY complaint is the bathroom. Although especially clean and inviting, way too small. It has only two stalls and on busy weekends the line can extend around the bar.
This is a small shop where you can get just about any kind of sport shirt made to order. I have purchased screened school shirts for my children and was impressed with the quality and the customer service. Mr. Jenkins is very helpful and will do what he can to accomodate you. My son needed baseball pants and he directed me to the rack, found the right size, and let my son try them on to make sure they fit. I gtreatly appreciate that level of customer service, especially when I have a baby on the hip and two other precocious ones. The prices are reasonable, actually quite good considering the prices in malls. My husband also gets all of his work shirts made her too. He has always been satisfied with the service and quality. The store itself is quite small and located in the downtown area so you have to park on the street, but not really a big deal.
There is no place like Mehlman's. When people move away, and comeback to visit, this is one place they always have to eat at while they are here. As a matter of fact, I just sent a Walnut cake to my sister in Las Vegas. Her husband will have to carry it aboard a plane for four and a half hours because she was dying for the homemade cake from back home! This is a family owned restaurant. It is nothing fancy by all means. Looks the same as it did thirty years ago when I was a kid. But, the food is good hometown cookin'. It is cafetria style and they usually have two lines open. The portions are generous and the prices are good. They have people to help carry your trays and they can accomodate large families. When there are events in town or buses making trips to the area it is a favorite stop. They have a wide variety of foods to choose from, but be warned, they are closed on Mondays.
This is a good hometown eatery. Although I have lived in the area all my life, for some reason I never ate a Gulla dog until last year. My sister was in town and she saw one of the owners of the establishment (who she had gone to high school with) and said we need to go there for lunch the next day. She said her husband was dying for the special hot dog sauce. We went the next day and the place was packed. It is on of those places were you always see someone you know. The food is good and the kids like the atmosphere. It has that old time feeling when you walk in. Nothing fancy, just keeping to the tradition of the small hometown feelin'. Looks kinda like a hole in the wall, but, aren't those the best places? Makes you want to go back for more! The prices are really cheap, too.
When looking for a dentist for my children, I was told to go to Dr. Chrisagis by a couple of people. I knew who he was because his sister went to grade and high school with my sister and I knew of the family. I remember the family as being close and good people so I thought I would give his practice a try. I am glad I did. My children, now ages 9 and 5 really like him and his staff as do I . The dental hygienists are very thorough and the office staff is so nice to everyone. I think they all actually enjoy their jobs and it shows. I get my teeth cleaned there now too. It is so nice to hear a doctor commend the work of the hygienest for doing a good job. They all seem to get along so well too. The office manager is always smiling and very helpful.
This little grocery store is a family owned and operated business. It has been around for quite sometime. Not sure how long but I have been visiting this hometown store for over 30 plus years. They offer fresh meats and some homemade items, one is, Ed's bean soup -which is DeIicious. They also carry regular convenient store and grocery type items. They have a Pepsi freeze machine and cappuccino machine, too, which is great for the kids and you. One of my favorite things when I was a kid was the penny and dime candy they sell by the checkouts. My kids always get a slim Jim or some candy when we shop there. But, my absolute favorite FAVORITE thing is there FRIED FISH ON FRIDAYS. It is the best. The seasoning is perfect. They deep fry it perfectly. The combination of oil, breading and time frying all make this the best fish sandwich around. It is so popular you have to call in and place an order early because they will sell out quickly. They make each order fresh to go. It is so refreshing to go to a place where the people are so nice and friendly and the food is great. The prices are good. I usually pay around 20.00 for two pounds of fish with the bread and tarter on the side. I think most people buy the fish by the sandwich. When ordered this way you always receive a generous portion.
Ok, it's been in business for quite a while but the place itself ...well it could use a lesson in customer service and in quality. If you are a first timer to this establishment it is VERY confusing, especially at lunch or on Fridays. The workers expect you to understand their signage and if you are in the wrong line they basically belittle you and make you move. When you question why they don't have a better system they tell you that once you become a regular you get used to it. Honestly, this place is really the only one you can go to in the area for fresh seafood. If that is what you need it is fine. The seafood is always fresh. However, if you are going to get the fish sandwiches on Fridays they are awful. They are overfried and dry. They are not seasoned and are very bland. They do deliver fish that other area restaurants season and fry themselves and they are the main supplier for fish fridays. But, you would think they would want their fried fish to be the best. I believe they are more interested in selling the product as quickly as possible but sacrificing taste to do that. The prices aren't bad, but you can get better fried fish at little grocery stores and smaller markets for the same price.
